Common ice maker & wine cooler problems

Ice maker and wine cooler symptoms we fix — and what usually causes them

Not sure what's wrong? Here's what each symptom usually means, straight from the bench.

Why is my ice maker not making ice?

An ice maker that's stopped usually comes down to a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve, or a worn ice-maker module. We test water flow to the unit first, since a low-cost inlet valve is far more common — and cheaper — than a failed ice maker itself.

Why is my wine cooler not cooling or not staying cold?

A wine cooler that won't hold temperature usually comes down to a failed thermoelectric module or compressor, a dirty condenser, or a bad thermostat or control board. We check the cooling system and airflow in order so we fix the real cause, not just the symptom.

Why is my ice maker or wine cooler leaking water?

Water pooling under or inside the unit almost always comes from a clogged drain, a cracked or loose water line, or a worn door gasket letting warm air condense inside. Most are same-day repairs — we clear the drain and pressure-check the line so it doesn't come back.

Why is my ice maker freezing up or making small, hollow cubes?

Undersized, hollow or slow ice usually points to low water flow from a partly clogged inlet valve or filter, a dirty condenser, or a thermostat cutting the cycle short. We check water supply and cooling together, since one weak part throws off the whole cycle.

Why won't my wine cooler or ice maker turn on?

A unit that's completely dead usually has a failed control board, a tripped thermal overload, or a bad door switch on models that pause when the door opens. We test power through the controls first, since it's often a low-cost switch or board rather than the compressor.

Why is my wine cooler or ice maker so loud or vibrating?

Buzzing, humming or rattling usually comes from the compressor or condenser fan, a thermoelectric cooling fan, or a unit that simply isn't level. We pinpoint the exact source so you're not paying to replace parts that aren't the problem.

FAQ

Questions we hear a lot

How much does ice maker or wine cooler repair cost?

Ice maker and wine cooler repair starts with a flat $110 diagnostic that's credited toward the repair. Most common repairs in Bergen County and nearby Rockland County run about $150 to $450 all-in, and you get the exact price upfront before any work begins.

Do you repair both built-in and freestanding wine coolers and ice makers?

Yes — we repair built-in, undercounter and freestanding units, both residential and light-commercial, including panel-ready and column models.

Do you repair Sub-Zero and U-Line ice makers and wine coolers?

Yes — Sub-Zero, U-Line, Marvel and the other premium ice makers and wine coolers are regular work for us, backed by 21 years of hands-on experience. One thing worth mentioning: if the unit is still inside its manufacturer warranty, tell us when you call — we'll check that first so you don't pay for a repair the maker still covers.

Is it worth repairing my wine cooler or ice maker?

As a rule of thumb, a repair is worth it when the fix costs less than about half the price of a comparable new unit and it's under roughly 8 to 10 years old. A thermostat, fan or inlet valve is usually worth fixing; a failed sealed system on an older basic unit often isn't — and we'll tell you honestly which case you're in.

How soon can you repair my ice maker or wine cooler?

Most calls placed earlier in the day get a same-day visit across Bergen County, NJ and Rockland County, NY. We're open seven days a week, 8am to 8pm.

Which ice maker and wine cooler brands do you repair?

We repair all major brands — including Sub-Zero, U-Line, Scotsman, Marvel, GE, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Danby and Perlick — across built-in, undercounter and freestanding models.
