GE front-load washer not draining, water standing in the drum — Oradell, NJ
One dollar stopped the machine. Nothing on it was broken — the filter did exactly what it exists to do, and then it was full.

The call
The complaint was as plain as they come: the washer would not drain. Water sat in the drum at the end of the cycle and the machine would not go on to spin.
What we found
Every front-loader has a filter sitting in front of the drain pump, and its entire job is to catch what the pockets did not. Coins, hairpins, buttons, the occasional key. It is a trap meant to be opened and emptied, not a sealed part.
On this machine the trap had done its job and then filled up. A one-dollar bill had been through the wash, unfolded itself across the mesh like a patch, and lint and hair had packed in behind it. Water had nowhere to go. The pump was fine, the control was fine, the hose was clear — the machine was simply doing what it should when the drain is blocked.
Money in the filter surprises people, but it is one of the commonest things we pull out of one.
The fix
Cleared the filter, checked the rest of the drain path to be sure nothing had slipped past it, and ran the machine through a full drain and spin before leaving.
Two habits prevent this call entirely. Check pockets before a load — that is the whole of the cure. And open the drain filter every few months: your manual will say where it is, on most front-loaders behind a small door at the bottom front, and expect water when you do. A filter emptied on a schedule never turns into a machine that will not drain.
One line worth keeping: if it will not drain and the filter is already clean, stop there. That is the point where this stops being maintenance.
