The call
The ignition did nothing. No spark, no click, no response on any burner. On a grill that gets used all summer that is effectively the end of the season, and it is why this call came in September rather than in May.
What we found
The ignition on this grill runs from a single battery in a small drawer behind the front panel. That drawer is the one part of the system whose job is to keep weather out of the electrics, and it had stopped doing it.
What came out was barely a battery. It had corroded through and leaked where it sat, and the corrosion had travelled — into the holder, then back along the wiring behind it. The tray itself had a crust of rust across the bottom.
Nothing in the ignition circuit had failed on its own. The electrodes were fine. The grill was fine. It had simply been starved by a battery quietly dissolving in a compartment nobody had opened in years.
The fix
Replaced the battery holder, the wiring running back from it and the battery itself, then checked the spark on every burner before leaving.
This one generalises, and that is the reason it is written up. An outdoor grill is an appliance that lives outside and gets treated like furniture. It is worth going over twice a year — when the season opens and when you shut it down — and two things belong at the top of that list: take the battery out over the winter, and check that its compartment still seals.
Nobody thinks about the battery drawer until the ignition stops, and by then the corrosion has already gone past it. Everything else on this grill was sound. A look once a year would have cost nothing and saved the whole repair.
