The call
The complaint was noise. A heavy, regular banging, loud enough that nobody wanted to start a load while the house was awake. The dryer still tumbled and still dried — it simply sounded like something inside was coming apart.
What we found
A Speed Queen drum does not hang off a shaft. It rests on support wheels and rolls on them while the belt drives it round. That is a large part of why these machines last as long as they do, and it also decides what a worn one sounds like: a thump once per revolution, keeping time with the drum, rather than a rattle or a scrape.
That is exactly what this was. One of the support wheels had gone out of round — deformed rather than simply worn thin — so the drum dropped onto the flat of it once every turn and the cabinet passed the sound on to the whole room.
Worth saying plainly, because a banging dryer sounds like the end of the machine and usually is not. The bearing was fine. The motor was fine. The belt was fine. The part making all that noise is smaller than your hand.
The fix
Replaced the support wheel, then went through the rest of the machine while it was open: lint cleared from the places the filter never reaches, blower and ducting checked, belt and idler looked over, drum turned by hand to hear it run true before anything went back on.
Opening a dryer is most of the work on a job like this. Closing it again without checking what else is in there would be leaving the cheap half of the repair undone.
Back together, run, and quiet. If your dryer has started knocking in time with the drum, it is worth having looked at early — the noise itself is harmless, but a wheel that far gone puts the load somewhere the machine was not designed to carry it.
